How to sleep for 12 hours or more

OBJECTIVE:
Students will stay in bed for at least half a day, sleeping except for when shutting off the TV or answering a phone call or calling into work sick.

MATERIALS:
Bed
Telephone

PROCEDURE:
The Warmup
1) Practice going to bed very late, between 4 and 6 a.m.

The Day Before
2) After being in that routine for a few days, wake up by 7 a.m. the day before "the big sleep."
3) Work a full day; take less than an hour nap; work another few hours.
4) Go to bed when exhaustion sets in. Be sure all alarm clocks are off.

The Big Sleep
5) Sleep until 6 a.m.
6) Shut off the TV you were too tired to shut off earlier before falling asleep.
7) Sleep until 9 a.m.
8) Call work and say you're sick.
9) Sleep until 9:30 a.m.
10) Groggily answer telemarketer calls.
11) Sleep until 10:00 a.m.
12) Wake up to the sound of the tornado siren test (it is the first Tuesday of the month, of course).
13) Sleep until your full 12 hours or more are complete, preferably until at least 13 hours from when you went to bed to account for the rude interruptions.

ASSESSMENT:
Students will have met their objective if wake-up time is greater than or equal to 12 hours after the time sleep began, accounting for interruptions. Students should feel a sense of exhaustion no later than 2 hours after being awake.
